Background
Private land ownership and properly functioning markets for rural land sales and leases and the relevant institutions are of vital importance to the success of transition in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Governments in the sub-region face difficulties in the development of active rural land markets. Proactive, enabling and supportive government policies and strategies to tackle such issues are required to advance efficient rural economies and sustainable rural livelihoods in CEE.
